Maine is a state speckled with artists. Whether nestled in the deep woods, thriving amongst others within the city, or situated off the coast, everywhere you turn you have the great fortune of meeting a Maine talent!
Maria Polky is one of those incredible talents! Growing up along the Maine coast, Maria was lucky to be surrounded by art at a young age. After competing a ceramics program at her high school, Maria was inspired to attend a weekend course at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, ME. Maria then used her ceramics portfolio to apply to The Rhode Island School of Design. Following in her late Uncle’s footsteps, Maria graduated from RISD in 2014 with a BFA in Ceramics.
Inspired by her surroundings in coastal Maine, Maria uses the potters wheel to throw her ceramic pieces.Shown here is the Dream Collection. The layers of rich blues and iron oxide provide gorgeous texture and color, reminiscent of sand and sea. A crystalline yellow glaze adds another element to the exterior.
After a month long adventure to the South West, Maria returned home newly inspired by cacti and succulents, and the rough landscapes she visited. These textural planters are currently her favorite ceramics to create, and a direct result of her time spent out West. Maria enjoys making these since it’s a combination of wheel throwing and hand building.
Maria’s work is currently featured at Dobra Tea in Portland, ME and FOUND in Kennebunk, ME.
